Edible Beauty

Brighten the corner of your porch!

Aren’t flowers amazing? They have a way of brightening the corner of our yards, porches or countertops. Many times they are given as thoughtful gifts, to loved ones.

Mother’s Day seems to be one of those days that flowers are given as thoughtful gifts. At Anderson’s we sell many hanging baskets before Mother’s Day. LOTS of Moms will be enjoying their baskets of color.

Hanging Baskets are everybody’s favorites!

Then….there’s the edible flowers! Did you know that many flowering plants are edible? Let’s look at the Portulca. (Also known as purslane)

Portulca flowers, leaves, seeds and stems are edible and actually VERY GOOD for you! According to therawadvantage.com “Purslane has the highest amount of heart-healthy omega-3 fats of any edible plant, according to researchers at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The scientists also report that this herb has 10 to 20 times more melatonin—an antioxidant that may inhibit cancer growth—than any other fruit or vegetable tested.”

After more research, it looks like something that should be added to our diets, on a regular basis. And, yes! Anderson’s sell Portulacas in 4″ pots or in Hanging Baskets. They love good hot sunshine and can survive on minimal watering, and taste kinda’ like green peas.

Another Edible Beauty is the Dianthus. Add some spice to your life! Throw some flowers in a salad for a peppery & clove type flavor. Dianthus flowers are known to help keep the Urinary Tract healthy.

Remember to try something new this summer. Whether it’s those edible flowers or a new type of tomato plant. Anderson’s has a huge variety of tomato plants, including heirloom plants.

And best of all, we never use any pesticides on our plants! The bees can pollinate as God intended, and your plants can thrive!

So, is beauty edible? We vote, YES! Sometimes, yes, it is!

Nature’s Remedies

…filled with local, raw honey

We love elderberry syrup! It’s a natural remedy that counteracts the flu virus! It’s filled with local, raw honey that also helps to aliviate allergies from our local Amherst/Lynchburg area. Here’s what Dr. Axe has to say about elderberry syrup:
“Health benefits of the elder plant include naturally improving colds, the flu, sinus issues, nerve pain, inflammation, chronic fatigue, allergies, constipation and even cancer.
When used within the first 48 hours of onset of symptoms, the extract has actually been found to reduce the duration of the flu with symptoms being relieved on an average of four days earlier.”

I craft this in our home kitchen, processing it with love, long-hard hours, and care. Then, as I stand at the register visiting with our customers, at Anderson’s, I hear testimonies. Elementary teachers tell me how they haven’t had the flu, as in previous years. Another testimony is a mother who started giving it to her elementary-age daughter and she hadn’t been sick in 5 months. Before Elderberry Syrup, she was constantly sick. It’s amazing how well it works.

Another great local product we advocate is the Jewelweed Lotion made by Rustic Remedies in Amherst. Jewelweed dries up poison ivy and poison oak and helps relieve the itching.

What is so interesting to me, is the fact that many times you will see that Jewelweed grows right beside Poison Ivy, in the woods. Isn’t that fascinating? It’s another one of God’s antidotes!

We are honored to provide both of these items for you at Anderson’s, in Madison Heights!
